Shawl-Anderson Dance Center hosts a variety of events each year: from the yearly Queering Dance Festival to quarterly salons, to special events such as panel discussions and open rehearsals.
Started back in 2008, the Dance Up Close/East Bay Series is a small presenting program through Shawl-Anderson Dance Center. The program aims to serve artists with production support, community connection, and artistic amplification. At the same time, DUCEB strives to share and celebrate the live dance experience in the East Bay. Performances have taken place at 2704 Alcatraz Ave as well as Finnish Hall, Waterfront Theater, and Parker Electric. Artists presented over the years have included Paufve Dance, Nina Haft & Company, Dana Lawton Dances, ahdanco, Fog Beast, Rogelio Lopez & Dancers, Andrew Merrell, and Danny Nguyen, to name a few.
Founded in 2019, the QUEERING DANCE FESTIVAL is by and for LGBTQ+ movement artists. Through performances, events, workshops and more, QDF highlights the artistic work and issues on the minds of the queer, trans and gender-nonconforming dance community in the East Bay. Produced by the QDF Steering Committee, a non-hierarchical collaborative of queer dancers, QDF presents dance through a queer lens, elevating the work and diverse voices of local LGBTQ+ movement artists from all backgrounds.
Salons are intimate experiences with 25-50 guests, whether at 2704 Alcatraz Avenue or at spaces throughout the East Bay. Shawl-Anderson Dance Center aims to host 2-4 Salons a year, whether through an open call process or through a curatorial process. Our most recent Salon in September 2024, as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month, partnered with local artist David Herrera to curate the evening.
Alongside performances, salons, workshops, and classes, SADC also hosts town hall gatherings, panel discussions, guest speakers, and book launches. Events will be posted on this page.
