1-Week Ballet Dance Intensive for ages 12-18

August 19 - 23 | 9:30am-2:30pm

The One-Week Ballet Intensive is for students who are excited about ballet and are interested in a deeper understanding of ballet techniques, history, body care, and repertoire. Students should have at least one year of ballet training. The mornings will start with an hour and a half technique class where students will be challenged at their personal level. After technique class, students will have a different specialty class each day. These are supporting classes that pertain to ballet training: Pilates, yoga, stretching, feet care, physical health, history, music and more. This class will be followed by lunch and a short viewing of selected ballets with a discussion on the varieties of techniques that currently exist. The day finishes with a repertoire class where the students learn steps from a classical ballet and incorporate performance skills

Tuition $318: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

The tuition balance is due in full by Saturday, July 20th. In the event that your child cannot attend after paying in full, a refund is available minus the $100 deposit if requested on or before June 22nd. After that date, no refunds will be given unless due to illness or injury that prohibits participation.

1-Week Modern Dance Intensive for High School Students

July 8 - 12 | 9:15am-4pm

The One-Week Teen Modern Intensive is for students who have just completed grades 8 -12 with at least one year of modern dance training. The focus of this intensive is to expand each student’s understanding of their technical strengths, goals and challenges. Each morning students will take both a modern and a ballet technique class. Afternoon classes will range from improvisation and partnering to special topics such as phrasework, inversions, floor work and more. Staff includes Shawl-Anderson faculty and other Bay Area guest artists.

Tuition $318: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the intensive. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

2-Week Modern Dance Intensive for High School Students

July 29 - August 9 | 10am-4pm

Shawl-Anderson Dance Center is proud to present the 12th Annual Teen Modern Intensive. This program is for students who have completed grades 8-12 by June 2013 with a minimum of one year of modern dance training. This intensive is a special workshop geared towards serious pre-professional dance students who would like to participate in a rigorous training program that will be physically and technically challenging. Students will be immersed in dance and learn a lot of material within a brief amount of time. A dance intensive can give students a taste of what college dance programs are like and can be a transformational experience for teen dancers. Students will participate in four classes each day including: Modern Technique, Ballet Technique, Repertory, Composition/ Improvisation, and Special Topics. Enrollment is limited to 20 students to best provide individualized attention. Students will be divided into two levels based on a placement class held on the first day. There will be a final presentation of material learned in all of the classes on Friday, August 9 from 4-5pm at the Center.

Tuition $633: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the intensive. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

1-Week Dance Intensive for Middle School Students

July 15 - 19 | 9:30am-4pm

This program is for students who will have just completed 5th, 6th or 7th grade in June 2013 with at least one year of dance in any style. Students will explore a range of dance techniques, from Modern and Ballet to Jazz and Hip Hop. Specialty classes throughout the week will include: world dance, improvisation, choreography and other movement forms, such as yoga. Middle school students excited about dance of all kinds will find this workshop challenging, inspiring and fun.

Tuition $318: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the intensive. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

2-Week Hip Hop Dance Intensive for ages 12-18

June 17 - 28 | 9:30am-4pm

Are you someone who is ready to learn, work, and deepen your foundations in Hip Hop dance? Want to build your technique, learn and create choreography, and find your own freestyle voice? Want to perform? If you answered YES to any of the above questions, this summer intensive is for you! Jessica Wolf and Shawl-Anderson Dance Center bring you the 4th Annual Hip Hop Dance Intensive, offering some of the Bay Area’s Best to teach the technique, elements, history and culture of Hip Hop dance. This is a unique opportunity, open to students ages 12-18, who are dedicated, enthusiastic, hard-working and openhearted about Hip Hop dance and its culture. Some dance training in any style is preferable for students to get the most from this intensive. The intensive will culminate in a final performance on June 28th at Shawl Anderson Dance Center.

Tuition $660: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the intensive. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

Half Day Hip Hop Camp for ages 9-11

August 12 - 16 | 9am-12:30pm

This fun filled Hip Hop Dance Camp is for the young dancer, ages 9-11, who loves to move and explore while learning the foundations of Hip Hop dance. It is a unique opportunity for kids that are excited about Hip Hop dance, history, and culture. Taught by Jessica Wolf and guest artists, students will learn alignment through stretching, foundational steps, musicality, and isolations. Dancers will be challenged to pick up phrases and create their own choreography. The week is full of movement, freestyle, play, and fun. Perfect for the student with little dance experience and who are dedicated, enthusiastic, hard-working and open-hearted about learning.

Tuition $210: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the intensive. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

Half Day A.M. Dance Camp for ages 7-9

July 22 - 26 | 9am-12:30pm

This fun filled camp is for the young dancer who loves to move, learn, and create. Dancers will stretch, strengthen and build coordination through a morning modern dance class full of imagery and vibrant movement. Following the morning class, a visiting youth teacher will join us each day to teach Ballet, Irish Dance, Flamenco and more. Students will learn a short dance, and be introduced to the history, music, costumes, and culture of the various styles. The day will complete with an improvisation class. Dancers will explore ways to create their own movement and collaborate with their camp mates through fun movement games. This joyful and complete dance experience is a great way for the young dancer to explore all aspects and a large variety of dance.

Tuition $198: A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot in the camp. Students are encouraged to register early as enrollment is limited.

DRESS CODE: All students should bring a layer for warmth in addition to:

  • MODERN: Leotard, tank top, or fitted shirt that covers the navel with tights, leggings, sweatpants, or shorts. Hair must be neatly pinned or pulled back. Students will be dancing in bare feet for most classes, and ballet slippers for ballet class.
  • Ballet: Black leotard, pink tights, ballet shoes, hair secured in bun. Boys: White shirt, black tights, ballet shoes.
  • HIP HOP: Loose or fitted pants that cover your knees. Loose or fitted tops that cover the navel with straps/sleeves that do not fall off the shoulders. Students need to wear sneakers and bring knee pads.
  • HALF DAY CAMP: Tank top or fitted shirt with leggings, sweatpants, or shorts. Hair must be neatly pinned or pulled back. Students will be dancing in bare feet for most classes. Please bring cotton socks and a pair of sneakers or walking shoes for any outdoor activities.

FOOD: For full day programs students should bring water, lunch and at least two healthy snacks each day. While there is food available nearby, lunches and breaks are brief. We ask that students pack food for the day rather than using break time to buy food outside the Center. For Half Day camps, students should bring water and at least two healthy snacks.

ATTENDANCE: Every intensive and camp is either 5 or 10 days in duration. Students are expected to participate every day for the full time. No exceptions. Each day builds upon the previous day and the success of the intensive for everyone is supported by 100% attendance and participation by all dancers. Each of the 2-Week Intensives culminate in a final presentation on the last day. Details to follow via email.

SCHOLARSHIPS: A very limited number of scholarships are available and will be awarded based on merit and financial need. Requests are due by April 15th, 2012. Please submit a scholarship request form when you pay your deposit and we will contact you by April 30, 2012.
