ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM (AIR)
In December, 2004, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center established its Artist in Residence Program. In 2014, we expanded and changed the program slightly.
There are two kinds of residencies to apply for at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center:
The Seasonal Residency includes:
• 6-8 hours of rehearsal space per week for 3-4 months (beginning in January, June or September)
• free classes for yourself or dancers participating in your residency with you
• opportunities to perform at the Center and/or run workshops or open rehearsals
The Hourly Residency includes:
• 100 hours of rehearsal space to be used whenever you wish during the calendar year
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center believes in the value of giving artists time and space to create work, free of expectations to create an end product. In the Bay Area, regularly renting studio space is one of the biggest expenses for choreographers, and Shawl-Anderson strives to help choreographers make work without struggling to pay for space.
To apply for a residency, please send a 1-2 page letter addressed to Frank Shawl to the attention of Rebecca Johnson, Managing Director. The letter should indicate whether you are interested in the Seasonal or Hourly Residency (if Seasonal indicate your preference for January, June or September). The letter should describe your work and choreographic experience, explain why you would benefit from a residency, and include links to video of your work online if available. Additional support materials are welcome including DVDs, reviews, letters of support, etc. but are not required.
Letters should be submitted each year by September 1st with a decision made by October 1st regarding residencies for the following year. If you have other questions regarding residencies, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
In 2014, we awarded Seasonal Residencies to Kate Jordan (winter/spring) and Stranger Lover Dreamer (summer/fall). Due to the number of exceptional applicants, we also created the Hourly Residency consisting of 100 hours of rehearsal time to be used during the calendar year. These residencies went to: Tanya Chianese, Tyler Eash, Daria Kaufman and Rogelio Lopez.
